The story of The Baltimore Upholstery Company begins in the winter of 1944 in Wake County, North Carolina. A girl child was born to Ruth and Daniel Williams. She would soon go on to be inspired by her grandmother, Pearlie, a former sharecropper. She became mesmerized when she saw her sewing a garment on a foot-pedal sewing machine at the tender age of four years old.
At the age of five, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland with her family. And that’s when her love for sewing really took off. She began making clothes in her home economics class, and when that wasn’t enough she snuck into a classroom, just so that she could have the opportunity to sit at a powered sewing machine.
At the age of 16, she began working in different Upholstery shops in Baltimore. After lying about her age and almost getting fired for obvious inexperience, she realized she had a talent and a desire to become the best seamstress in the Upholstery and Furniture Industry.
With well over 60 years of experience, my daughter and I decided to start The Baltimore Upholstery Company. Our main goal is to deliver great furniture (click to see pictures) to our clients while putting customer service and quality workmanship front and center. Our secondary goal is to have fun, enjoy life, and do our very best to make sure that the time our customers spend with us is fun, enjoyable, and worthwhile.
