Now, I’m pretty sure you may be able to find some fabrics that are lower or higher in cost, but this a general price range that most fabrics will fall within. Upholstery Shop Sample Books
Many Upholstery Shops around Baltimore have sample books of different designer fabrics. Keep in mind though, some of these books have been kept for years, so even though you may be looking at beautiful fabrics, more than likely they have been discontinued and no longer in stock. My experience with Upholstery Books has always been a hit or miss, usually a miss. If you choose this route, make sure you are looking at books that are no more than 6 months old.

THE BASICS
Scissors are needed to cut fabric, cording, strings, and anything else that needs to be further shaped or cut away to achieve a professional look. This product can be found at any Joann Fabric and Craft Store located in Baltimore.
Yard Stick is needed to line and measure your fabric, foam, Dacron, and cording. It will always be 36 inches long. This product can be found at any Home Depot or Joann Fabric and Craft Store located in Baltimore.
Chalk is used to mark measurements, and directions (front, back, top, bottom). This product can be found at any Home Depot or Joann Fabric and Craft Store located in Baltimore.
Razor Blade is used when removing old fabric from furniture. It can also be used as a seam ripper. In fact, this is the best tool you can use for ripping seams, and opening seams in upholstery. Razor blades can be found at any Home Depot, Joann Fabric and Craft Store or General store.
THE UPHOLSTERY BASICS
Upholstery Staples are used to attach the fabric to the furniture base. These can be found at Tedco.
Cutting Table is a long and wide table used to cut fabric and anything else you may need. Many times you will be working with a lot of fabric in excess of 5+ yards, therefore you will need a long and preferable wide table to cut on. Try to find a table at least 6 feet in length; but if all else fails you can use a card table, the floor, or your dining room table. You can buy a cutting table at Home Depot, Walmart, Target, and Sam’s Club.
Work Horses or Work Benches are used to hoist furniture off the ground, so that you can begin the upholstery process. This product can be found at any Home Depot located in Baltimore.
36 X 36-Inch Board is placed on top of the workhorses to create a platform and workspace. Mainly used when upholstering smaller pieces of furniture such as armchairs and kitchen seats. It can be dually used as a cutting board. This product can be bought and custom cut at any Home Depot located in Baltimore.
TOOLS
Air Compressor is a machine that compresses air, and powers the staple air gun for heavy-duty upholstery. This product can be found at any Home Depot located in Baltimore.
Industrial Sewing Machine is a heavy-duty sewing machine, used, mainly in factories to sew industrial grade fabrics, such as upholstery fabrics, leather, vinyl, animal skins, etc. This product is found at Tedco, a store previously located in Baltimore. It is currently located in Halethorpe. Supplies can be bought in store and online.
Long Nose Staple Air Gun is used for getting in tight areas and corners. Used on very detailed, intricate pieces of furniture. This product can be found at Tedco.
Short Nose Staple Air Gun is an all-purpose air gun. Most projects can be completed successfully with a short nose staple air gun. This product can be found at Tedco.
Staple Puller is used to pull staples from the furniture base and fabric. This product can be found at any Joann Fabric and Craft Store or Tedco.
Pliers are used to pull broken staples from the furniture base. You can buy these at your local Home Depot.
Rubber Mallet is used to smooth tacking strip on the outside back of different types of furniture. This product can be found at Home Depot or Tedco.
Upholstery Hammer is a slender hammer with a magnetized head. It’s traditionally used to hammer hard nails into furniture. It’s mostly used today to flatten staples that can’t be pulled from the wood; which if left could create an injury or a snag in the new fabric. This product can be found at Tedco.
PADDING AND TRIM
Foam Rubber is padding. It comes in different sizes, and used mostly in seat cushions. This product can be bought and custom cut at House of Foam, as well as, Joann Fabric and Craft Store.
Dacron is used to wrap foam rubber, and also helps to in fill in corners for a smooth, professional look. It can be found at House of Foam, as well as, Joann Fabric and Craft Store.
Upholstery Welt Trim is fabric covered cording used as trim for furniture, seat cushions, and pillows. This product can be found at Tedco.
THE FINISHERS
Silicone Spray is used on foam and Dacron so they can easily fit into its seat cover or pillow cover. This product can be found at Tedco.
Fabric Spray Adhesive is used to bind two pieces of foam rubber together, or Dacron and Foam rubber together. This product can be found at Tedco.
Scotch Guardis a finishing product that protects the upholstery fabric from stains. This product can be found at your local Joann Fabric and Craft Store or Walmart in Baltimore.
As you can see Baltimore, upholstery supplies can be quite easy to find. If you buy all of these items, you will be well on your way to becoming a professional upholsterer. Place your fabric front side down on the table, then the Dacron/Foam cushion, and finally place your seat cushion on top of that, front side down. Check to ensure that everything is centered and straight. You will also need to make sure that you mark the top and the bottom of both your seat and your fabric, so that all of your kitchen seats are identical.
Now, we get to the fun part, STAPLING! You will need your air compressor and a short/long nose stapler attachment. Begin stapling from north to south, and then east to west, making sure to pull the fabric as tight as possible as you go along. Please avoid stapling the corners. You will want to work your way towards each corner, starting from the inside and working your way to all four corners. Many times you will have excess fabric, especially on the corners. You will need to cut away some fabric so that the bottom of the seat is as smooth as possible.
Rinse, wash and repeat these steps until you have completed all of your kitchen chairs. Now, you will need upholstery dust cover fabric to go on the bottom of each seat. Make sure to measure twice, because you can only cut once. Once you have everything measured, staple the dust cover on the bottom of each kitchen seat.
Voila! You are done. And, hopefully what you have before you is a reflection of how superb you are at upholstery. And right about…now, you’re on Facebook showing your friends how much of a creative you are, and how you rock at all thing arts and craft. Am I close, or am I just projecting? Probably projecting. One of the easiest ways to change the interior design of your kitchen is by changing the fabric on your Kitchen Seats. The kitchen in many homes is the central place of socialization and congregation; and for most people that can mean the fabric on your kitchen seats can take a beating. Over time, the seats can become soiled, torn, lose cushion support, or all three.
One sure shot way to remedy these issues are to have your kitchen chairs reupholstered. This project can be daunting for the faint of heart, but can be completed if the right person assists you with the right tools, and at least intermediate knowledge of upholstery.
To start, we must remove the kitchen seats from the base, and then take off the existing fabric. You will need upholstery tools to do this with ease. If not, you can use a screwdriver and a hammer (Be Careful!). However, the easiest way to remove the fabric is to use a razor blade to cut around the seat. Try to cut on the flat portion of the kitchen seat, just outside of the staples.
Once you have removed the old fabric, you will need to cut the new fabric. If you plan to replace your padding, you will need to cut Dacron and foam. Just in case you’re wondering, what Dacron is, it’s used in upholstery to wrap and protect foam cushions, as well as, fill in the outer edges for a clean finished look.
Next, you will need to measure the seat to ensure you have enough fabric to cover it. You will also need to make sure that you give your self 2 – 3 inches extra fabric to work with. This is to make sure we have enough fabric to pull under the seats to staple. At this point, we’re going to start gluing some things together. Dacron has the tendency to move; therefore we are going to use Spray glue to bond the Dacron to the top of our piece of foam.
