Furniture Upholstery: Sentimental, Odd, or Antique Furniture

Sentimental Odd Antique Furniture Upholstery Collage

Many of our customers who get furniture reupholstered categorize their furniture in one of these three categories: sentimental, odd, or antique. Over the years, I’ve had more than a few customers ask me “Constance, should I upholster my furniture?” Therefore, I created this article for all of the folks who are having a hard time figuring out if the furniture in their home is worth reupholstering. We’ve been in the industry a long time, over 50 years and we have a few tips that we would like to share with you to help you and your families decide if furniture upholstery is a good option.

Sentimental Furniture

The first two pieces of furniture that I received; I got upholstered in Baltimore. It was a Duncan & Phyfe Sofa given to me by my mother, and an Armchair with a pillow back, given to me by my father. Growing up, I knew that most of my furniture, if not all, would be secondhand. I wanted the ability to take quality pieces of furniture with sentimental value and recreate it, over and over again. Thus, creating family Heirlooms that would stay in the family for decades and even centuries to come.

Odd Furniture

Odd furniture isn’t hard to find, but it is extremely hard to find again. Therefore, if you have a piece of furniture that is odd, and you haven’t seen anything quite like it, hold on to it. Odd furniture has the tendency to be great conversation starters, and the focal point of a room. In fact, this is why odd furniture is a great choice for furniture upholstery.

Antique Furniture

Antique furniture is self-explanatory. Not only do these pieces usually have extraordinary woodwork, they hold their value extremely well, sometimes going up in value. The quality wood frames are timeless, if kept free from extreme moisture and cat claws. You can modernize your antique furniture or you can maintain the same style, and types of fabric used when your antique was considered contemporary for its time. I’ve seen people put Denim on Duncan & Phyfe Sofa’s, and others who used classic rich velvets, with` traditional Bolster Pillows at each end.

The great thing about furniture upholstery is that you can creatively and stylistically make your furniture completely your own. All the while, you are adding value to the furniture itself, and your household overall. If you have furniture that you love, for reasons such as sentimental value, oddity and rarity, or it’s oldness, chicness and antiqueness, don’t hesitate, invest, and keep them in good shape. Your children, and grandchildren will thank you. And, just remember no matter the reason you have decided to have your furniture upholstered, The Baltimore Upholstery Company will make sure we provide you with Quality Workmanship and Stellar Customer Service. Give us a call today.

5 Things to Consider When Buying Fabric for Furniture Upholstery

Charlotte Fabric Collection - 3 Upholstery Fabric Books

Buying fabric for an upholstery project can be a confusing and daunting task. For that reason The Baltimore Upholstery Company offers free fabric consultations. We realized that many of our customers didn’t have a clue about how to choose a good upholstery fabric, or where to buy a good upholstery fabric. In an attempt to help our customers and friends who may be looking for help on this topic, we have decided to share the top 5 things to consider when buying fabric for furniture upholstery.

Price

Need I say more? Unless, you’re a millionaire without a budget, more than likely price is a major factor whenever you make a purchase. Designer fabrics can go as high as several hundred dollars per yard, but you can also find discounted upholstery fabrics as low as $9.99 per yard.

Usage

How often do you use your furniture? Do you sit on it daily? Is it your favorite sitting chair? Is it a sofa your children like to sleep, play and eat on? Is it a piece of furniture that stays in a room that no one goes in? All of these questions you need to ask yourself and consider before you can determine what type of upholstery fabric you need.

Durability

Durability is directly correlated to usage. If your furniture is used a lot, then you want to make sure you choose a high quality, durable fabric. If you want a piece of furniture upholstered that is barely used, the look of the fabric will be more important than durability. A great way to determine durability in upholstery and home décor fabrics is by looking at the rub count or double rub count. The rub count as it pertains to upholstery fabric indicates how durable the fabric is. The higher the rub count number, the more durable the upholstery fabric is.

Children

Last, but not least children. Children pull on your heartstrings, but they can also thoroughly destroy furniture. Great fabrics to consider when you have children is anything that can be wiped off, or anything that has removable covers that is also machine washable.

Hopefully, these five tips will make buying upholstery fabric a little bit easier. If you have any questions about upholstery fabric, feel free to leave a comment below.  We love to hear from you.  Also, if you’re contemplating getting furniture upholstery, and you are in and around the Baltimore area, please give us a call at 410-870-9187, we would love to help, and remember Fabric Consultations are Free.

Different Types of Furniture Upholstery in Baltimore

Furniture Upholstery in Baltimore showing four pictures arranged in a collage. Picture of three arm chairs and window seat.

Sofa, Arm Chair, Occasional Chair, Ottoman, Loveseat, Headboard, Cornice, should I go on? I can spend at least an afternoon, going through all the different types of furniture. The list is endless, but when referring to upholstery we are only referencing furniture that is covered with fabric. Now, I try not to brag, and I’m not biased or anything, but I’ve noticed that, The Baltimore Upholstery Company knows a lot more about furniture upholstery in Baltimore, than any of those other snazzy, jazzy upholsterers. And if you have a minute or three, I encourage you to sit back, relax, and take a read.

Sofa Upholstery

Are you ready to take nap time up a notch? Sofa Upholstery includes all styles, such as Loveseats, Sectionals, and Antiques.

Chair Upholstery

Arm Chairs, Antique Chairs, Tufted Chairs, Kitchen Chairs, Salon Chairs, Barber Chairs, Dentist Chairs and Occasional Chairs.

Chaise Lounge Upholstery

The Chaise Lounge was the first piece of furniture I ever bought, and my favorite piece of furniture in a home.

Ottoman Upholstery

This is also known as the working man’s slice of heaven. Just kidding, but it is what I like to call it. It’s nothing better than putting your feet up on furniture that is made specifically, for putting your feet up.

 Headboard and Footboard Upholstery

I think I hear an R&B song in the background (Just Kidding!). Sometimes and over time, upholstered headboards and footboards take a beating; if you know what I mean (wink, wink). All of those games of footsies wear over time. And if you’re anything like my youngest daughter, in the quiet of the night, those little finger will peel and dig a hole, right in the middle of it. Love her, but I’m glad those days are over.

Cornice Upholstery

This is not a vegetable. I repeat, this is not a vegetable. Cornice Upholstery involves covering plywood with fabric, and mounting it to the wall above the window. Many of our clients who order cornice upholstery have draperies or curtains.

Car and Boat Upholstery

Car and Boat Upholstery are for clients who have car or boat interior they need repaired, or changed for a new, custom look.

Outdoor Furniture Upholstery

Enjoy your summer nights in comfort and style. Outdoor furniture upholstery is most requested in Baltimore between March and August, the spring and summer months. Make sure you choose outdoor fabric, such as Sunbrella.

Children and Pet Furniture Upholstery

Last but not least, the little crumb snatchers, I mean children and pet furniture upholstery. Many people now have furniture in their homes specifically made in dimensions for children and pets. Even though the furniture is smaller, it can be reupholstered like any standard size furniture.

Got it? If so, you should now know all about the different types of furniture upholstery in Baltimore. As you can see, you have many different options to choose from. And just remember, any piece of furniture that is covered with fabric, can be upholstered. Many Upholstery Shops around Baltimore have sample books of different designer fabrics. Keep in mind though, some of these books have been kept for years, so even though you may be looking at beautiful fabrics, more than likely they have been discontinued and no longer in stock. My experience with Upholstery Books has always been a hit or miss, usually a miss. If you choose this route, make sure you are looking at books that are no more than 6 months old.

Thurmont Fabrics/Discount Fabrics

This store isn’t in Baltimore, in fact it’s quite a distance from Baltimore. But, I had to mention it, because it’s a great resource to have when buying upholstery fabric. It’s located in Thurmont, Maryland, and has rolls and rolls of designer upholstery fabric at discount prices.

Hopefully, with these three resources you will be able to find upholstery fabric in Baltimore.  However, if the first two fail, Thurmont is about an hour and thirty minutes away; and in my opinion well worth the drive considering the prices and selection. Remember, always to talk to your Upholsterer before buying fabric because they will give you insight into what kind of fabrics will work best for your furniture. Place your fabric front side down on the table, then the Dacron/Foam cushion, and finally place your seat cushion on top of that, front side down. Check to ensure that everything is centered and straight. You will also need to make sure that you mark the top and the bottom of both your seat and your fabric, so that all of your kitchen seats are identical.

Now, we get to the fun part, STAPLING! You will need your air compressor and a short/long nose stapler attachment. Begin stapling from north to south, and then east to west, making sure to pull the fabric as tight as possible as you go along. Please avoid stapling the corners. You will want to work your way towards each corner, starting from the inside and working your way to all four corners. Many times you will have excess fabric, especially on the corners. You will need to cut away some fabric so that the bottom of the seat is as smooth as possible.

Rinse, wash and repeat these steps until you have completed all of your kitchen chairs. Now, you will need upholstery dust cover fabric to go on the bottom of each seat. Make sure to measure twice, because you can only cut once. Once you have everything measured, staple the dust cover on the bottom of each kitchen seat.

Upholstery Quick Fix: Change Fabric on Soiled Kitchen Seats Part One

Kitchen Seat Before and After Picture - Content Created by The Baltimore Upholstery Company

One of the easiest ways to change the interior design of your kitchen is by changing the fabric on your Kitchen Seats. The kitchen in many homes is the central place of socialization and congregation; and for most people that can mean the fabric on your kitchen seats can take a beating. Over time, the seats can become soiled, torn, lose cushion support, or all three.

Kitchen Seat Old Fabric - Content Created by The Baltimore Upholstery Company

One sure shot way to remedy these issues are to have your kitchen chairs reupholstered. This project can be daunting for the faint of heart, but can be completed if the right person assists you with the right tools, and at least intermediate knowledge of upholstery.

Kitchen Seat Without Fabric and Old Foam - Content Created by The Baltimore Upholstery Company

To start, we must remove the kitchen seats from the base, and then take off the existing fabric. You will need upholstery tools to do this with ease. If not, you can use a screwdriver and a hammer (Be Careful!). However, the easiest way to remove the fabric is to use a razor blade to cut around the seat. Try to cut on the flat portion of the kitchen seat, just outside of the staples.

Once you have removed the old fabric, you will need to cut the new fabric. If you plan to replace your padding, you will need to cut Dacron and foam. Just in case you’re wondering, what Dacron is, it’s used in upholstery to wrap and protect foam cushions, as well as, fill in the outer edges for a clean finished look.

Kitchen Seat Foam and Dacron Glued Together - Content Created by The Baltimore Upholstery Company

Next, you will need to measure the seat to ensure you have enough fabric to cover it. You will also need to make sure that you give your self 2 – 3 inches extra fabric to work with. This is to make sure we have enough fabric to pull under the seats to staple. At this point, we’re going to start gluing some things together. Dacron has the tendency to move; therefore we are going to use Spray glue to bond the Dacron to the top of our piece of foam.
