Do you feel like you’re falling through your seat cushions? Are you having back pain or just simply having a hard time getting off your sofa or chair? Do your seat cushions feel too soft or lumpy? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s possible that you have sagging seat cushions that need to be repaired. Here are 3 remedies to fix sagging and uncomfortable seat cushions.
Refill Seat Cushions
This is the most common repair needed to fix sagging seat cushions. Upholstery foam does not last forever. With heavy and daily use high quality upholstery foam may last up to 15 – 20 years. However, if you’ve experienced spills, or have pets then it’s very likely that you may need to replace your cushions within 10 – 15 years.
We also have clients who bought new sofas and chairs and have determined that the foam or padding support is not sufficient. Sometimes, the padding isn’t sufficient because the cushions don’t have any upholstery foam in it at all, or if so, very little.
Tip: Unzip your cushion cover. If you see your foam crumbling, or falling apart, then you will need to replace your upholstery foam as soon as possible.
In any event, if this accurately describes your seat cushions, then you will simply need to refill your cushions by replacing the foam and/or padding (Dacron or Cotton).
Repair or Replace Springs in Cushions
Believe it or not, you can put springs in your removable seat cushions. Springs are most common in sofas and chairs that have tight seats, or seats without removable seat cushions. However, as I mentioned they can also be found in seat cushions that you can unzip and remove.
Due to use, time and wear the springs can become damaged. And due to the damage, the springs will eventually need to be repaired. Depending on the damage and age of the springs they may need to be simply retied; this would be the easiest fix. However, if the damage is more extensive, then the springs may need to be replaced and then tied. Tying springs allows them to serve its purpose, provide support; as well as prevent the springs from poking through the foam and the cushion cover itself. When the springs are not functioning properly you lose the support that the springs are supposed to provide, and you could also risk injury if the springs poke through. Therefore, this is a furniture repair that you should prioritize, especially if it is furniture that you use frequently.
Repair Upholstery Webbing in Furniture Seats
Upholstery webbing also called Jute Webbing is a woven fabric that you can find in the seats of dining room chairs, kitchen chairs, occasional chairs, armchairs, settee’s, loveseats, and sofas. It is used to create a firm seat for seat cushions. It is also commonly used on seat backs to provide support for your back.
High quality jute webbing can last the life of your furniture if it is installed correctly, and if the furniture has been treated respectfully. If your seat cushion is sagging and the remedy is to repair the upholstery webbing, it usually means that the company who manufactured your furniture used cheap webbing or installed the webbing incorrectly. However, it’s usually the former.
